It is possible, I note upon further examination, that the files I was
testing with were copied bit-for-bit between the Unix and Windows systems
while I was editing them (using scp and/or zmodem over ssh) ... so it may
have been a false alarm.

If it happens again and clearly isn't a case of the above, I'll be sure to
post. Sorry for the bother.
