In http://www.cvsnt.org/pipermail/cvsnt/2001-December/003000.html, I
reported similar behavior. Soon after, I received an e-mail from Hendrik
De Vloed <mailto:hendrik.devloed at barco.com> reporting almost exactly what
Marcus reports. Tony Hoyle's response was:

There have been several reports that removing antivirus programs
will fix some other, vaguely similar sounding problems. Before I
try this, I'd like to know if anyone else knows more about this.
