Hmm... which protocol are you using?

with pserver and alike, it would most likely happen on
every network roundtrip, ntserver could get away with
less.

I'm not really an expert on these either, so probably
we'll have to wait that Tony or Bo donate their time.

I'm not an expert in these.  However, I think authentification occur only at
beginning of the cvs command.  The slowing I notice was "while" the command
was processing.  The directory update list was "scrolling" a lot slower.
