Hi cvsnt experts,

We (five developers) have been running cvs in local mode for some time, and we have become so exited about cvs that we
now want to setup a dedicated cvsnt server for in-house use in sspi mode and extend the use of cvs to the r&d dep. which amounts to about 40 people

I have been asked by our system administator to put forth some system requirements for such a system, but I am a litlle bit lost. I am hoping from some input from you experts.

Condition:
1. Repository size may grow to a size of up to 50GB (large size mainly due to quite some binaries that we have to put under version control for complicated reasons that I will not repeat here - it is a long story)

Functional requirements:
1. The system availability should be high (Use a Microsoft 2000 server on "good" PC and have an UPS)
2. Reliable backup procedures of repository (RAID5 or replicated disks on the PC + tape backup every night).
3. CVS operations should be "fast" (RAM? disc access speed? processor? network bandwidth?)

I can (sort of) figure out how to fulfill req. 1 and 2 (as indicated in the parenthesis), but I am uncertain about 3. I have toyed around a little bit with our existing repository (700 MB) on an (ordinary) old 400 MHz Pentium, and it is my feeling that the load on the server is never very high for such a repository and with a single user accessing the repository at a time. However, I am very uncertain what happens if the repository gets very large with perhaps 3-4 concurrent users (and where some of the ,v binaries can have sizes of houndreds of MB).

Does anyone have any experience on how much RAM is taken up in such cases, and whether disk access speed and processor power is important?

My feeling is that network bandwidth may the real show-stopper in these cases (we have 100 Mbit LAN)?

Any input on these performance issues would be greatly appreciated.

best wishes,

Kim Hansen
