Only the flag isn't going to do it all, but Tortoise does it :)

In addition to the edit -x you need to make sure that you have the latest
version. Tortoise does that automatically by running an update on every
binary file before running the edit -x (the -x also automatically for
binary files). 

Maybe edit -x could fail if the sandbox revision is not the latest revision
on the current branch?
