What is the previous version of CVS?  Previous OS?  Are you running any 
server-side scripts?  Can you define "severe"?

One diagnostic step would be to check the "disable client lookup" (or 
something like that) from the cvsnt control panel advanced tab (off the 
top of my head, it disables reverse-DNS lookups on all clients).
