And that:
3) He isn't using WinXP Home and if he is using XP Pro that simple 
networking is disabled.

He should also have the passwords synchronized, not blank, for proper 
SSPI automatic logins.

Better off though to set up a small Linux box with Samba as a PDC for 
his small domain, then he doesn't need to worry about password 
synchronization (but there's a learning curve, might be easier to shell 
out some cash for a Win server).
