This is What I see:
(this command is run against a sandbox ande reports both server and
client versions):

cvs ver
***** CVS exited normally with code 0 *****

Client: Concurrent Versions System (CVSNT) 2.5.01 (Travis) Build 1882
(Release Candidate 1) (client/server)
Server: Concurrent Versions System (CVSNT) 2.0.41a (client/server)

(your command runs anywhere with path access to cvs and reports *only*
the client):

cvs --version

***** CVS exited normally with code 0 *****

Concurrent Versions System (CVSNT) 2.5.01 (Travis) Build 1882 (Release
Candidate 1) (client/server)
