Try it from the command line - tortoise sometimes misses some of the output.

Check any firewalls etc. you have in the way... it's best to try 
client/server on the same machine, a machine in the same LAN, etc. so 
you know there's nothing interfering.  Firewalls and VPNs have been 
known to cause issues.
