I've seen it crash on my Home computer Win2k too. In much the same way 
Oliver is describing,  but I put it down to mixing installers.

I did at one stage setup windbg and found that it was crashing somewhere 
in howl.dll I think.  I don't have VS7 at home so didn't get around to 
debugging it more accurately than that.
