The latter technique did not work either ("f:" is a local drive):

cvs -q -d f:\r\cvs\repository rtag -A -r V1_1_BRANCH V1_1_BRANCH_OLD
mymodule

cvs -d f:\r\cvs\repository version
Concurrent Versions System (CVSNT) 2.0.58d (client/server)

I end up with the same 1.81.4.2 version number reference on the
V1_1_BRANCH_OLD tag.

Is the above what you meant by "use 2.0.58d locally to create your alias
tags"?

If so, is my only recourse to now try 2.5.01 (client-only)?
