Hard to believe BackupExec doesn't have a better recovery strategy than 
that, but I do believe it.  FYI, my knoppix / dd method restores from a 
bootable CD.  Of course it doesn't help if you don't have somewhere else 
to back it up to (e.g. networked big HDD).

I'm sure there are other better backup solutions out there that work 
cross platform, but I don't know of any offhand.
