for me it looks more like an issue with the libiconv version.

and my 5c to the compiler version discussion:

on solaris gcc 3.3.x doesn't build cvsnt at all because of missing
support for wchar in libstdc++.5. So I'm forced to use 3.4.x. And it
works with no problems.
