That's the trace log.

Try:

set CVS_CLIENT_LOG=d:\cvs
cvs -d ::cvs.cvsnt.org ver

You'll find that the log of the transfer shows compressed binary after 
the initial handshake (for that reason you should specify -z0 when 
logging normally).

> cvs -z9 -t -t -t -d:pserver:anonymous at cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/ffdshow co -P ffdshow

That could easily be a server side issue - you said you were using a 
cvsnt server...
