Sounds like that file is anyway.  Have you manually edited the RCS file 
at all?  Any hardware failures recently?  Are you running your 
repository in local mode over a network link?

To fix the problem you should grab the head and branch tip versions, 
then restore the RCS file to the most recent backup and re-commit those 
most recent versions.
