This is generally not supported by the open source community, basically
because there are too many things to go wrong.  We have hundreds of
commercial users doing it, but their environments are somewhat more
reliable and limited in variation.

If the network share is from a Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 server with
no anti virus scanning on the server then it should all be ok.  

Old Samba servers, any NFS servers and many many NAS servers are
completely unreliable.  Installing Anti Virus on both the server and the
client will often cause headaches too.
