The message comes from putty.  GUI clients are free to do with it what 
they want, using the cvsgui protocol.. I expect both WinCVS and 
TortoiseCVS pretty it up a little.

The problem with external ssh clients is some of them do odd things like 
  trying to do CR/LF translation across the protocol, thus breaking it. 
  plink.exe should work OK as an external client (since it's basically 
the same as we're using in library form..  we just streamlined the I/O a 
bit).
