Since my test machine is both client and server I installed the server
package (build 3055).

However, this does not change the behaviour at all. Updating to a time
several years back gives me my old file but with the new name....
Is the repository file corrupted by my use of the earlier version for
doing the rename?

cvs ver

Client: Concurrent Versions System (CVSNT) 2.5.04 (Zen) Build 3055
(Release Candidate 7) (client/server)
Server: Concurrent Versions System (CVSNT) 2.5.04 (Zen) Build 3055
(Release Candidate 7) (client/server)
