I'm running Win 2003 server with SQL Server 2005 Express installed and EVS build 3292. I get the following message at the foot of the webpage: Repository initialisation failed : No error: Database error: Unable to create database: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Invalid Instance()).]Invalid connection. at .VirtualFs.cpp:490 at .FileInfoFile.cpp:1568 : no error Error appears to be something to do with the SQL server instance name. How does EVS pick up the SQL server details? I can't find an obvious config file that would need to be changed to set the connection string etc. Regards, Colin From cfraser at levelfour.com Fri Apr 17 17:36:58 2009 From: cfraser at levelfour.com (Colin Fraser) Date: Fri, 17 Apr 2009 17:36:58 +0100 Subject: [evs] Problem initialising database References: Message-ID: OK, I posted too soon and have found a solution myself :) There is an option during the SQL Server installation that defaults to installing a named instance (rather than a default instance) of the db engine. Annoyingly there doesn't seem to be any way to change this after it's installed so I removed and reinstalled SQL Server, this time selecting the 'default instance' option and it works fine. Might be something that needs to be allowed for in the EVS install process I guess. Another small improvement would be a message saying 'success' when the initialisation finished as the web page just navigated back to the home page and I wasn't sure if it had worked or not. Thanks for documenting this - we'll try and get the instructions on the express init page cleaned up to reflect this. > Might be something that needs to be allowed for in the EVS install process > I guess. Another small improvement would be a message saying 'success' > when the initialisation finished as the web page just navigated back to > the home page and I wasn't sure if it had worked or not. The non-express setup already does this. The aim of the express setup was to have as little 'interruption' as possible, but we'll try and find a way of achieving both. There are two updates in the pipeline: 1) CM Suite 2008 R2 (includes bug fixes and evaluation guide/documentation) 2) CM Suite 2009 R1 (includes improved migration tools and support for VSTS clients). These are both 'almost' complete and just waiting some finishing before we can release them, but hopefully they will appear quite soon. I am now trying to migrate a fairly large existing repository using the Migrate utility but this has failed. I pointed it at the legacy CVSNT 2.5.03 repository and the new EVS repository and it began processing but after an hour or so it failed. I didn't write down the message that was shown (not a popup, just the wizard ending), but was something related to a problem retrieving tags/revisions. Are there any log files generated that could help me identify the problem? This repository does have a lot of tags and branches so I was expecting there might be problems here. I'm running EVS & SQL server express on a Win 2k3 box and the Migrate client from an XP SP3 box. Any suggestions welcome. Migrate will write a log file.. I'll post the details when I get to a copy tomorrow morning (unless Arthur turns up in the meantime with the info). During testing generally the only things that tended to go wrong were the loss of the link to the remote machine - migrate will retry a few times but eventually give up. It should come up with a prompt though if that happens. Thanks, I'll have a look for the log file. I tried importing a much smaller repository and it worked fine, so fundamentally my system seems to be working OK. I have just noticed there is a limitation that hyphens are not supported in tag names so this could be the problem as our standard tagging convention breaks up release numbers with hyphens e.g. something like V1-0-0-0. I will try it again regardless and see what happens. I've searched in my temp dir but I cannot find any log file. Any other thoughts on tracking down the issue? Try an rlog from the root of the repository - that's basically how the migrate finds out tag information. It may be that that's failing. Tony
