It isn't documented for update.

"This option has a long history and is not guaranteed to actually leave the 
sandbox in the same state that it started with. It is supported only for the 
checkout command to an empty directory, which is required by certain frontends."

Perhaps that wording needs to be made stronger, or the option removed 
completely from the client (since the -n co case is generally done by 
connecting directly to the server).
