I'll take your word that that's how it works... TBH, I just use and
write/maintain some ebuilds... I've never looked under the cover to see how
they actually work (there is only 24 hours in a day).

Makefile.am isn't there... Makefile.in is:
revision 1.12.2.8 in the CVSNT_2_0_x branch committed 8 days or so ago.
