I'm not sure I understand what you mean. There is no such term as a
"checkout status" in CVS. Status could be something like Locally Modified,
Added, Removed, Up-to-date, Needs Patch, etc. In the broadest sense "Edited"
could probably be called a status as well. What are *you* talking about
there? The only status (in the CVS-sense of the word) that could be affected
by an Update is Needs Patch/Update. This should turn into Up-to-date after
an Update. I don't see any harm in that.

Sounds like PB-files are not ideally handled by conventional source code
control systems then. I have never worked with PB, so I really don't know.
