sserver needs:

1. the ca.pem file installed correctly on both client and server
2. a certificate

The installer will generate a self signed certificate and install it if the 
correct options are set, which should take care of the server side.  You can 
check using the control panel.

Unfortunately as you've seen openssl doesn't give very nice error messages, so 
it's really hard to diagnose an sserver connection.  Once installed though it 
keeps working.
