It shouldn't make any difference... the log message isn't processed in 
any away except to store it.

There's this:

 > cvs commit: warning: unrecognized response `Mo3e u=r,g=r,o=r' from 
cvs server

That first word should be 'Mode'.  That strongly suggests actual 
corruption on the packet coming from the server.  I'd check the 
connectivity - hubs, network cards, etc. as
