I. Account Size and Hotmail Janitor

Hotmail imposes a 2-megabyte (MB) size limit on free member accounts. You receive notification from the Hotmail Janitor as your account begins to approach the limit, and when your account reaches that size.

After you are notified that your account has reached the 2 MB limit, you have five days to delete enough messages to reduce your account to below the 2-MB size limit. It is a good idea to bring your account well below the 2 MB limit. If it is still too large, the Hotmail Janitor begins deleting messages (usually older ones from all of your folders) until your account is smaller than the 2-MB size limit. You cannot recover any message that the Janitor deletes.

Hotmail also reserves the right to freeze your account if you go over the 2-MB size limit. You can sign in to read the messages already in your Inbox, and delete or move messages until your account is below the 2-MB size limit. If you do not immediately delete some of the messages, the Hotmail Janitor may automatically delete them, even within the 5-day warning period. Your account also begins to return mail to the sender. After you reduce your account size below the 2-MB size limit, you can regain access to your account and read and write e-mail messages.

If you must retain some messages, consider saving them to your hard disk using Microsoft Outlook 2002, also included in Microsoft Office XP. Take advantage of all the Outlook 2002 features and functionality to move messages from one MSN Hotmail folder to another and easily store messages into folders on your hard disk drive for your personal use offline.

For more information about the great features of Microsoft Outlook 2002 including how to get additional support for Outlook, go to:

For more information about saving and printing e-mail messages, click the "Help" button to the right of the "Contacts" tab. In Help, click the "Find" tab, and type "saving e-mail" or "printing".
