It will do an update, and attempt to convert the file, reapplying your 
changes.  It seems to handle this quite successfully.  It's always best 
to start with an unmodified file though.

Yes, provided the file is in the right format (telling cvs that an 
executable file is unicode will not have any sensible result for example).
