Oracle downloads are free for development 
(http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/index.html) but not for 
deployment.

OTOH I think it's too complex for most people... I'd expect people who 
used that to be using it internally & have a trained DBA already.

It's really not an either/or choice... the database API is quite simple 
and if someone has a favourite database implementing an interface to it 
is quite fast.  My intention is to support as many databases as I can 
reasonably maintain.
