FWIW, from the help output of ver 2.5.03 build 2151:

e:\>cvs --help-commands
CVS commands are:
        ...
        rename       Rename a file or directory
        ...

e:\>cvs --help-synonyms
CVS command synonyms are:
        ...
        rename       ren mv
        ...

It says that it renames directories, and it offers the synonym "mv" for
"rename". So one may be using "mv" to move files and "rename" to rename
directories...
