In what was is it unmanageable. Eg: wont fit on a backup tape anymore,
too slow when doing xyz?

There are some things, however:
A) we do not recommend them - there is usually nothing 'wrong' with
having a 'large' repository
B) the things we could suggest are not suitable to suggest to a
'complete CVS novice' - they are dangerous and for critical situations
by experienced system admins only.
