Please send the exact command you are typing that takes a 'long time' on
the client, preferably a checkout command showing the CVSROOT, eg:
cvs -d :pserver:user at host:/repo checkout fred

Please also provide details as to which XP of Vista you are using (ie:
is it XP Home?) and as much information as you have about the server (is
it CVSNT, is it in the same building, is it windows or linux etc).
