It looks like only a problem on systems without PAM - debian has PAM (as 
does solaris, osx, redhat, and all the other platforms we test on except 
I think HPUX) so that block of code would never normally be compiled

Make sure you have libpam0g-dev installed (which should be a build-dep I 
expect but I've never looked at the debian package).

The fix is obvious from the code... I'll leave that to you guys :)
